Himax Technologies (NASDAQ:HIMX) and Vuzix Corporation (NASDAQ:VUZI) have jointly introduced a new optical reference design for augmented reality (AR) glasses, marking a major step toward making smart eyewear as wearable as traditional frames.

The collaboration, announced January 6, 2026, focuses on a "prescription-ready" architecture that eliminates the bulk typically associated with high-performance AR optics.

The breakthrough design integrates Himax’s ultra-compact HX7319FL Front-lit LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) microdisplay with Vuzix’s high-efficiency waveguides.

The projector module is remarkably small, measuring just 0.34 c.c. in volume and weighing only 0.79 grams, yet it delivers a crisp 720x720 resolution.

By utilizing a color-sequential front-lit approach, the system achieves a balance of high color saturation and low power consumption, essential for the "all-day wear" requirement of consumer and enterprise devices.

Complementing the microdisplay is Vuzix’s proprietary "push-pull" waveguide technology, which features an ultra-thin 0.35 mm plate.

This architecture is uniquely designed to support high-index glass and standard prescription lenses without adding significant thickness.

The reference design supports a 30° field of view (FOV) and brightness levels exceeding 1,000 nits, ensuring visibility in various lighting conditions.

Both companies emphasized that the solution is designed for scalable, high-volume manufacturing using Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL), clearing the path for OEMs to bring lightweight, stylish AR glasses to market in 2026.
