Autonomous AI agents could fundamentally disrupt online advertising by removing the need for human attention-driven browsing, according to a16z Crypto.
In a blog post, Merit Systems co-founder Sam Ragsdale argued that the internet’s long-standing ad-based model is becoming obsolete as AI agents begin to handle purchasing decisions.
“Humans reading a webpage can be distracted by an advert, monetizing their partial attention, but LLMs and agents do not get distracted,”
Said Merit Systems co-founder Sam Ragsdale.
Ragsdale said the current internet economy, built on advertising-driven engagement since the late 1990s, may not translate into an AI-led environment where agents prioritise efficiency over exposure.
The global online advertising market, estimated at $291 billion in 2025, could face structural disruption as AI platforms integrate direct purchasing features within conversational interfaces.
Early examples include AI-driven “Instant Checkout” tools that allow users to complete purchases without leaving chat platforms, though these systems remain restricted to curated merchant networks.
Ragsdale argued that open protocols enabling autonomous agent commerce, such as Coinbase’s x402 and Stripe-linked payment frameworks, represent a shift toward a more decentralised and agent-driven digital economy.
