The Albanese government has formalised a "two-way street" energy pact with Taiwan, securing a consistent flow of refined fuel as other Asian producers begin to tighten their exports.

Taiwan, which currently supplies approximately 12% of Australia’s diesel and a significant portion of its jet fuel, has pledged to maintain these critical shipments despite growing regional instability.

Douglas Hsu, Taiwan’s representative in Australia, emphasised the symbiotic nature of the partnership, noting that a third of the island's natural gas-powered grid relies on Australian LNG.

"We understand Australia’s commitment to continue to ship the LNG we procure to Taiwan," Hsu told The Australian Financial Review. "On the same token, we will also commit our supply of those refined oil products to Australia."

The commitment provides a vital buffer for Australia, which imports 90% of its oil.

While nations like China and South Korea have imposed export restrictions, Taiwan remains a steadfast partner alongside Singapore.

Beyond liquid fuels, the relationship is evolving towards high-tech collaboration; Taiwanese firms are now exploring Australia as a hub for energy-intensive data centres and AI development.

Australia's vast land and renewable energy potential offer a competitive edge for training large language models while meeting stringent European green energy criteria.

As Foreign Minister Penny Wong joins international efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, this bilateral cooperation underscores a pivot towards regional resilience and a diversified energy future.
