Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced a comprehensive relief package for small businesses as the Australian economy grapples with the fallout from the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

The suite of measures, negotiated with the Australian Taxation Office, mirrors pandemic-era initiatives by offering more generous payment plans, the cancellation of interest penalties, and tailored support for PAYG instalments in sectors experiencing significant downturns.

Furthermore, Chalmers confirmed a 10-year extension of the responsible lending exemption for small business loans, aiming to reduce regulatory "slugging" and expedite credit access during the crisis.

The announcement comes as the Treasurer moves to quell rising anxiety regarding "stagflation"—the volatile mix of stagnant growth and soaring prices.

Former Treasury Secretary Martin Parkinson warned that the nation is currently "staring into" this economic abyss, with inflation projected to exceed 5% by mid-year and growth forecasts for 2026 sliding to a mere 1.65.

Parkinson urged immediate, "urgent" tax and expenditure reforms to stabilise the fiscal position.

However, Chalmers dismissed the stagflation label as an inaccurate characterisation of Australia’s domestic strengths, citing a resilient unemployment rate of 4.2%.

While acknowledging "extreme pressures" on growth and fuel prices, the Treasurer maintained that the government’s targeted intervention would shield the most vulnerable industries.

Supporting the effort, Australian Banking Association CEO Simon Birmingham noted that while fuel spending has surged by 10%, specialist bank teams are now deployed to manage supply chain disruptions and prevent a broader collapse in consumer activity.
