Vertical Aerospace (NYSE:EVTL) has achieved what it describes as a landmark moment in aviation history, successfully completing the first piloted thrustborne transition of a full-scale electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

The flight, conducted on April 2, 2026, at the company’s Flight Test Centre at Cotswold Airport, saw the aircraft take off vertically like a helicopter before transitioning into wingborne flight.

This maneuver involves the complex transfer of lift from the propellers to the wings—a technical hurdle that remains the defining challenge for the nascent advanced air mobility industry.

Test Pilot Paul Stone commanded the sequence, during which the front propellers tilted forward to provide horizontal thrust while the rear propellers stowed to reduce drag.

The aircraft then accelerated into a smooth wingborne flight before performing a conventional runway landing.

This marks the first time a piloted, full-scale eVTOL of this class has operated such a sequence under the direct oversight of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The successful test represents the completion of the first half of a "two-way transition" sequence.

Once fully certified, the aircraft is intended to take off and land vertically from helipads or rooftops while flying on wings for efficient regional travel, eliminating the need for traditional runways.

The achievement follows a major financial boost for the Bristol-based firm.

On March 30, 2026, Vertical announced an agreement in principle for a financing package worth up to $850 million.

The capital is intended to provide the liquidity necessary to fund the remaining certification process and bridge the gap to commercial operations.
