TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) announced on April 10, 2026, that its SATORP refinery in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, suffered damage during a series of incidents on the night of April 7 to 8.
The facility, a joint venture with Saudi Aramco, has shut down several operational units as a safety precaution while management conducts a full damage assessment.
The incidents resulted in specific damage to one of the refinery’s two primary processing trains.
While TotalEnergies confirmed that no casualties were reported among the staff, the company moved quickly to suspend operations at the affected units to prevent further risk.
The SATORP platform, in which Aramco holds a 62.5% stake and TotalEnergies holds 37.5%, is one of the world's most complex refineries, with a capacity to process 460,000 barrels per day.
The disruption comes at a period of heightened geopolitical volatility in the Middle East.
Earlier this week, Saudi defense officials reported intercepting a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones over the kingdom’s eastern industrial hubs.
While the company did not explicitly name the source of the "incidents," it directed investors to its "Middle East Conflict" impact page for broader context regarding its regional activities.
The shutdown adds further pressure to a global energy market already grappling with supply concerns.
The SATORP facility is a critical supplier of diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemical feedstocks to both the Saudi domestic market and international buyers in Asia and Europe.
Analysts suggest that a prolonged outage of a major processing train could tighten regional middle distillate spreads and impact TotalEnergies' downstream earnings for the second quarter.
This latest incident follows a prior reported drone strike on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery in March 2026, which briefly sent global oil prices above $100 per barrel.
As of Friday morning, Brent crude was trading higher as traders weighed the potential for extended refinery downtime in Jubail.
TotalEnergies indicated that it will provide further material updates as the technical assessment progresses.
