The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) announced a significant restructuring of its Brazilian operations on April 8, 2026, confirming plans to idle and demobilize its Araxá Mining and Chemical Complex and halt related mining at Patrocínio.

The move marks a strategic shift for the company’s Mosaic Fertilizantes segment as it pivots away from high-cost phosphate production in the region.

Mosaic intends to pursue a formal sale of the Araxá assets while simultaneously refocusing its efforts at Patrocínio on the development of Niobium, a critical mineral used in high-strength alloys and advanced battery technologies.

The restructuring will result in a global reduction in phosphate output of approximately 1 million tonnes annually.

However, management emphasized that the decision is expected to significantly improve the company’s long-term cost structure and cash flow profile.

Financially, Mosaic expects the move to result in a pre-tax book impact of $350 million to $400 million in the first quarter of 2026.

This includes a non-cash impairment charge ranging from $275 million to $300 million.

Following a potential transaction or the full idling of the sites, the company projects a decrease in annual capital expenditures of $20 million to $30 million and a reduction in yearly operating expenses of $70 million to $80 million.

The workforce reductions at both sites will be implemented immediately, and the company has committed to providing transition support for affected employees.

The idling of these facilities comes at a time of shifting dynamics in the global fertilizer market, as major producers seek to balance supply with fluctuating demand in South America’s agricultural heartland.
