  • Crypto gifts to South Korean minors reached 4.03 billion won in 2025, up 2.7 times.
  • Reported gift cases nearly doubled from 53 to 103 in one year.
  • Tax officials will gain wider access to crypto records from January 2027.

Crypto gifts to South Korean minors have surged 2.7 times to 4.03 billion won ($2.8 million) in 2025.

The number of reported gifts also nearly doubled, rising from 53 cases in 2024 to 103 last year.

Children aged 11 or younger received 2.35 billion won, nearly triple the 774 million won recorded in 2024.

“As intergenerational wealth transfers through virtual assets increase, we need to accurately understand the actual status of gifts and strengthen the infrastructure needed to ensure appropriate taxation,” Jung said.

South Korea will expand inheritance and gift tax inquiries to crypto service providers such as Upbit and Bithumb from January 1, 2027.

The National Tax Service will gain another source of records when checking digital assets linked to inheritance and gift tax cases.

The changes arrive as South Korea prepares a 22% tax on qualifying annual crypto gains above 2.5 million won from 2027.
