SEC plans 24/7 tokenised stock route
- The SEC is preparing a temporary route for 24/7 trading of tokenised US stocks.
- The plan could let approved platforms trade shares overnight, at weekends and on holidays.
- Existing securities laws would still apply while the SEC develops permanent rules.
The SEC is preparing an exemption that could allow approved platforms to trade tokenised US stocks 24/7.
The proposal could let digital shares trade outside normal US market hours, which run from 9:30am to 4pm.
The SEC has not announced final rules, eligibility requirements or an implementation date for the exemption.
Tokenised shares would remain securities under US law, with rules covering trading, custody and settlement still applying.
Regulators must also address investor rights, price discovery, market surveillance and links with existing clearing systems.
The SEC is also reviewing wider market rules, while Nasdaq and DTCC continue regulated tests of tokenised securities.
