Russia will restrict direct peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading from 1 July 2027, requiring residents to use authorised intermediaries.
Federal Law No. 282-FZ establishes the legal framework governing cryptocurrency transactions and regulated market participants.
The Bank of Russia’s guidance confirms that individuals may trade cryptocurrencies directly with one another only until the July 2027 deadline.
After that date, eligible brokers and registered cryptocurrency exchange organisations will handle transactions under the new rules.
Separate provisions prohibit individuals from transferring cryptocurrency from digital accounts to their own non-custodial wallets.
The regulatory framework took effect on 1 September 2026, establishing oversight for cryptocurrency intermediaries and digital asset service providers.
Sberbank was among the institutions reported to have received authorisation to provide cryptocurrency exchange services in October 2026.
The changes will narrow the permitted routes for direct cryptocurrency trading in Russia, placing greater emphasis on regulated intermediaries.
