OpenAI has shut down its Sora video generation app after six months, with CEO Sam Altman confirming the company is winding down its text-to-video products.

The company said it would discontinue the app and related tools, with further details to be shared on timelines for the platform, API access and user data preservation.

“We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app,”

The company said in a post, adding that more information would follow on how users can manage their work.

Sora launched in September and quickly gained traction, reaching one million downloads within five days as OpenAI moved into short-form video content dominated by platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

However, the product faced scrutiny over deepfake risks, prompting OpenAI to restrict certain content after backlash from public figures concerned about misuse.

Altman said the company will now redirect resources toward longer-term initiatives including robotics and productivity-focused tools, while discontinuing video-related features across its products.

The shift comes as Disney abandoned a planned three-year partnership and $1 billion investment tied to Sora, highlighting changing priorities as the AI market continues to evolve.
