  • UCLA researchers raised about US$4,000 through an OnlyFans account supporting a decades-long marmot research project.
  • More than 10 unofficial OnlyMarms-inspired memecoins have appeared on Solana through the Pump.fun platform.
  • Researchers said they did not create the tokens, while the project needs US$75,000–US$100,000 annually.

UCLA researchers have raised about US$4,000 through OnlyMarms as unofficial memecoins emerge on Solana (CRYPTO:SOL).

More than 10 OnlyMarms-inspired tokens have appeared on Pump.fun, but their creators and links to the researchers remain unclear.

“Apparently, this is a meme coin for good that people like,” said UCLA Professor Daniel Blumstein.

Blumstein said the researchers did not create the tokens, although third parties have encouraged them to register for transaction fees.

The research project needs about US$75,000–US$100,000 annually to support graduate students and fieldwork, according to Blumstein.

The UCLA project has studied yellow-bellied marmots in Colorado since 1962, with funding becoming harder to secure through traditional channels.

In 2024, animal-themed Moo Deng (CRYPTO:MOODENG) briefly reached about US$680 million in market capitalisation after launching on Pump.fun.

At the time of reporting, Solana price was $73.86.
