  • A Nova Scotia judge has ordered convicted killer William Sandeson’s Bitcoin wallet and laptop returned to his family.
  • The cryptocurrency’s estimated value ranges from $8,000 to more than $200,000.
  • The court found prosecutors failed to establish any connection between the Bitcoin and the 2015 murder.

A Nova Scotia judge has ordered the return of Sandeson’s Bitcoin (BTC) wallet, according to a report by Global News.

Justice John Bodurtha ruled that the laptop containing the digital wallet must go back to Sandeson’s family, but rejected his request for $5,000 in seized cash.

The judge described the seized cash as “offence-related property.”

The decision followed a finding that prosecutors failed to prove the cryptocurrency was connected to Taylor Samson’s 2015 murder.

Sandeson previously valued the Bitcoin at $8,000 to $10,000, while a lawyer representing Samson’s family estimated its value could exceed $200,000.

The cryptocurrency had also featured in a separate wrongful death lawsuit involving Samson’s family.

Sandeson is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder after his conviction in 2023, following the overturning of his original conviction.

The ruling separates the Bitcoin wallet from other seized property that the court directly linked to the offence.
