Moonbeam shifts from Polkadot to Base for AI

  • Moonbeam will migrate from Polkadot to Ethereum layer-2 Base to build an onchain AI agent communication and settlement network.
  • GLMR holders must bridge their tokens from the Polkadot parachain to Base before 31 July, while exchange-held tokens require no action.
  • The move reflects Moonbeam's strategy to focus on AI-driven blockchain applications as interest in autonomous agents continues to grow.

Moonbeam (CRYPTO:GLMR) announced it will transition from the Polkadot ecosystem to Coinbase's Base network to develop an onchain communication and settlement protocol for autonomous AI agents, while asking GLMR token holders to migrate assets before 31 July.

The project said the Moonbeam Protocol will focus on enabling AI agents to discover one another, negotiate tasks and settle payments entirely onchain, although it has not provided a launch date for the new platform.

"This is a pivot to the most exciting frontier in crypto: autonomous AI agents that find each other, negotiate work, and pay each other entirely on-chain, without a middleman," Moonbeam said.

Moonbeam said GLMR holders must bridge tokens held in staking contracts, lending markets and other decentralised finance applications from the Polkadot parachain to Base before the deadline, while users holding tokens on centralised exchanges do not need to take any action.

The project said it will continue supporting its interoperability services and existing infrastructure on the Polkadot parachain during the transition, and GLMR's market performance was not disclosed alongside the announcement.

Moonbeam launched as a Polkadot parachain in January 2022 to provide Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) Virtual Machine compatibility within the Polkadot ecosystem, and several community members described the migration as a setback for the network.

The move follows growing industry investment in AI-powered blockchain applications, with companies including Coinbase, Circle, Aptos and Near developing infrastructure for autonomous agents despite relatively limited adoption of blockchain-based AI payment systems so far.

At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $1,790.90.
