A Texas man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for his role in a $20 million crypto fraud involving the fictitious Meta-1 Coin project.
US District Judge LaShonda Hunt ordered Robert Dunlap to serve prison time and pay restitution after he helped defraud nearly 1,000 investors between 2018 and 2023.
The scheme falsely claimed Meta-1 Coin was backed by $44 billion in gold and $1 billion in artworks, including pieces attributed to Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.
Prosecutors said Dunlap misled investors with promises of risk-free returns and used deceptive tactics, including artificial trading activity, to inflate the token’s perceived value.
“Would-be criminals planning to engage in similar conduct need to know that such actions will be met with a serious repercussion that includes loss of one’s liberty for an extended period of time,”
US prosecutors said.
Authorities said investor funds were instead used for personal expenses and luxury purchases, including a Ferrari, rather than any legitimate backing or investment activity.
The case underscores increasing enforcement against crypto-related fraud as regulators intensify efforts to crack down on scams targeting retail investors.
