KakaoPay targets 40M users with digital wallet
- KakaoPay plans to develop a digital "super wallet" supporting stablecoins and tokenised assets for its 40 million users.
- The company said the wallet will integrate blockchain-based payments and financial services into its existing platform.
- KakaoPay said broader adoption will depend on South Korea establishing a clear legal framework for digital assets.
KakaoPay announced plans to develop a digital "super wallet" that will allow its approximately 40 million users to store stablecoins and tokenised assets alongside traditional payment services.
Chief Executive Shin Won Keun said the wallet is designed to integrate money transfers, payments and blockchain-based financial services into a single platform, making digital assets accessible without requiring users to manage technical processes.
“On-chain finance has become one of the most significant transformations in global markets,” said KakaoPay Chief Executive Shin Won Keun.
KakaoPay said it is building blockchain infrastructure and working with financial institutions and stablecoin providers while monitoring discussions around South Korea's proposed Digital Asset Basic Law, which the company said will influence the rollout of digital asset services.
The company said the wallet is intended to combine stablecoins and tokenised assets within the KakaoTalk ecosystem, and following the announcement there was no direct market reaction.
KakaoPay said integrating digital assets into an existing payments platform could allow users to access blockchain-based financial services without switching between multiple applications, reflecting a broader trend towards embedding digital finance into everyday payment systems.
The announcement comes as South Korea continues developing its digital asset regulatory framework, with KakaoBank also reportedly preparing to enter the stablecoin market as financial institutions expand their blockchain-related services.
