Indonesian authorities have raised the alert status for Mount Bur Ni Telong in Aceh province to Level III.

The Geological Agency said increased seismic activity has been detected around the volcano since July.

Activity intensified and became shallower between November and December, according to officials.

The escalation followed a local tectonic earthquake and a series of aftershocks.

Acting Geological Agency head Lana Saria said the pattern indicates heightened volcanic risk.

Authorities warned of the potential for sudden phreatic eruptions triggered by tectonic activity.

Residents were also cautioned about the risk of hazardous gas emissions from the volcano.

Officials have banned all activity within a four-kilometre radius of the crater.

The public has been advised to avoid fumarole and solfatara zones near the volcano.

Authorities warned that gas exposure risks increase during cloudy or rainy weather conditions.

Local communities have been urged to remain vigilant and follow official safety guidance.
