House panel advances Bitcoin reserve bill 28-21
- The US House Financial Services Committee has advanced H.R. 8957 by 28-21.
- The bill would create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and require Treasury custody of federally held Bitcoin.
- Reserve Bitcoin would face a 20-year holding period under the proposed legislation.
The US House Financial Services Committee has advanced the American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026 by 28-21.
The bill would establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a separate Digital Asset Stockpile within the Treasury Department.
“We cannot allow Bitcoin to be held by the federal government to languish in fragmented and inconsistent custody,” said US Representative Nicholas Begich.
H.R. 8957 would require federally held Bitcoin from criminal and civil forfeitures to move under Treasury custody.
The legislation would require reserve Bitcoin to remain held for at least 20 years under the committee-approved framework.
The measure also includes reporting, auditing and federal digital-asset accounting requirements for government-held assets.
Committee approval does not make the proposal law, as H.R. 8957 still needs approval from the full House and Senate before reaching the president.
