Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched an investigation into OpenAI over concerns tied to its chatbot technology.
The probe will examine whether ChatGPT poses risks related to national security, criminal misuse and child safety, with subpoenas expected as part of the process.
“AI should advance mankind, not destroy it,”
Uthmeier said, adding that authorities are assessing whether sensitive data could be accessed by foreign adversaries.
The investigation also references allegations linking ChatGPT to harmful or illegal activity, including cases involving self-harm content and criminal incidents under review by law enforcement.
The move comes amid broader scrutiny of AI platforms, with competing systems such as Gemini and Grok also facing criticism over responses to sensitive prompts.
OpenAI said it will cooperate with the investigation, noting that more than 900 million users engage with ChatGPT weekly for tasks ranging from education to healthcare navigation.
The probe adds to growing regulatory pressure on generative AI as policymakers weigh new safeguards, including proposals for AI-specific legislation in Florida.
