Ethereum staking proposal could halve validator yield
- EIP-8363 proposes cutting Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) consensus yield from about 2.6% to 1.2% at current staking levels.
- Lido DAO (CRYPTO:LDO) fell 14.8%, while Ether.fi (CRYPTO:ETHFI) dropped 11.6% between August 4 and 5.
- Ethereum core developers will consider whether EIP-8363 should advance for possible inclusion in the Hegotá upgrade.
EIP-8363 proposes reducing Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) consensus yield from about 2.6% to 1.2% at current staking levels.
Ethereum currently has 41.5 million ETH staked, representing 34.07% of supply across 895,293 active validators.
“A zero-yield regime accelerates the capture it means to deter,” said Aave (CRYPTO:AAVE) founder Stani Kulechov.
The proposal would gradually burn more validator rewards as staking rises, reaching a 100% burn at 60.25 million ETH.
The authors propose introducing the changes over 18 months, while core developers consider EIP-8363 for the Hegotá upgrade.
Lido DAO (CRYPTO:LDO) fell 14.8% between August 4 and 5, while Ether.fi (CRYPTO:ETHFI) declined 11.6%.
The proposal has divided Ethereum researchers, DeFi founders and stakers over its possible effects on network security and staking economics.
At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $1,897.91.
