  • The US Department of Justice charged a cryptocurrency investor over an alleged US$20 million fraud scheme.
  • Prosecutors alleged the scheme defrauded dozens of investors through false promises about crypto investments.
  • The case forms part of ongoing US enforcement against alleged cryptocurrency-related fraud.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) charged cryptocurrency investor William "Will" Iza with allegedly operating a US$20 million fraud scheme that prosecutors said targeted dozens of investors.

According to the indictment, prosecutors alleged Iza convinced victims to invest in cryptocurrency ventures before using much of the money for personal spending instead of the promised investments.

The DOJ alleged Iza used investor funds to buy luxury vehicles, real estate and other personal assets while concealing the scheme from victims.

The criminal case will proceed through the US court system, where the government must prove the allegations, and Iza is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The DOJ has continued to investigate cryptocurrency-related fraud as digital asset investment has grown in recent years.

US authorities have increased enforcement against alleged crypto investment scams, warning investors to verify investment opportunities before committing funds.
