Blockchain groups press SEC for clearer crypto rules

Compartilhar
  • Six blockchain organisations have urged the US Securities and Exchange Commission to clarify its proposed crypto regulations.
  • Their joint submission calls for a clear definition of “digital commodity” in the proposed rule text.
  • The groups argue that clearer classifications would help distinguish qualifying digital commodities from securities under US law.

The joint letter was signed by Chainlink Labs, the Cardano Foundation, Ava Labs, Aptos Labs, Stellar Development Foundation and Hedera Hashgraph.

The groups want the SEC to embed its existing digital commodity classification directly into the proposed Regulation Crypto Assets rules.

Their submission argues that formal definitions would reduce uncertainty for developers, exchanges, custodians and digital asset holders.

The organisations propose defining digital commodities as assets deriving value from functional blockchain systems and market supply and demand.

They also seek clearer treatment of secondary-market transactions, voluntary safe-harbour provisions and continuity with the SEC’s March 2026 interpretation.

The letter explains that Layer 1 networks use native tokens to pay transaction fees, secure networks through staking or mining, and support governance.

The groups argue that predictable rules influence where blockchain developers choose to build, potentially affecting innovation and investment across crypto markets.

The submission seeks clearer federal oversight by defining digital commodity status and preserving distinctions between qualifying crypto assets and securities.
