Bithumb wins court stay on Korea suspension
A Seoul Administrative Court has temporarily blocked a six-month partial suspension of Bithumb, allowing the platform to continue onboarding new users while legal proceedings continue.
The stay suspends enforcement of penalties imposed by the Financial Intelligence Unit, which had ordered restrictions from March to September and proposed a $25 million fine.
The regulator cited around 6.65 million alleged breaches of the Financial Information Act, including transactions involving unregistered virtual asset service providers.
The court ruling allows Bithumb to maintain normal operations for now, delaying restrictions that would have limited new users from transferring assets to external wallets.
The case follows earlier scrutiny, including a February probe after Bithumb mistakenly credited users with 620,000 bitcoin during a promotional event.
The dispute is part of a broader trend, with rivals including Dunamu and Coinone also successfully challenging FIU sanctions in court.
The outcome could shape how South Korea enforces anti-money laundering rules across its crypto sector as exchanges push back against regulatory actions.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $78,132.25.
