Bitcoin open interest falls 19.5% in June

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) futures open interest fell from US$26.0 billion to US$20.89 billion during June, a 19.5% decline that exceeded the cryptocurrency's 11.4% price drop over the same period.

The decline occurred as Bitcoin fell from approximately US$71,200 at the start of June to US$63,234 by June 21, indicating traders reduced leveraged positions more aggressively than the underlying asset declined.

“So far, the data shows that excess leverage has been reduced,” said a CryptoQuant analyst.

Bitcoin reached a local low of approximately US$60,900 on June 6 as open interest dropped to about US$22.4 billion, a pattern that typically reflects liquidations and position reductions rather than new speculative activity.

Analysts said lower open interest does not guarantee a price recovery but may indicate a healthier derivatives market structure, while Following the analysis the Bitcoin price was approximately US$63,234.

Bitcoin later rebounded to around US$66,300 on June 15 while open interest recovered to US$23.5 billion, although futures exposure remained about US$2.5 billion below the level recorded at the start of the month.

CryptoQuant data also showed open interest fell a further 11.1% between June 15 and June 21, while the latest taker buy-sell ratio of 0.95 suggested relatively balanced positioning among futures traders.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $64,033.27.
