Adam Back has denied claims that he is Satoshi Nakamoto following a report by John Carreyrou identifying him as a leading candidate.

Back said:

“I’m not Satoshi,”

Rejecting the conclusion and pointing to his extensive public activity on cypherpunk mailing lists as evidence against the claim.

“I think it is good for bitcoin that this is the case, as it helps bitcoin be viewed a new asset class, the mathematically scarce digital commodity,”

Back said.

The investigation highlighted Back’s role in creating Hashcash, a proof-of-work system cited in Bitcoin’s white paper, as well as similarities in language between his writings and Satoshi’s.

It also pointed to his background in cryptography, distributed systems, and C++, aligning with known characteristics of Bitcoin’s creator.

However, emails revealed during the Craig Wright fraud trial show Satoshi contacting Back in 2008, suggesting they may have been separate individuals.

Back maintains he does not know Satoshi’s identity and argues that Bitcoin benefits from remaining decentralised and not tied to any single person or founder.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $70,827.25.
