Woodside Energy (ASX:WDS) has confirmed an oil discovery at the Bandit prospect in the US Gulf of Mexico, a breakthrough that could see new production fast-tracked to market during a period of intense global supply volatility.
The exploration venture, spearheaded by operator Occidental Petroleum and supported by partners Chevron and Woodside, intersected hydrocarbons within the Green Canyon Block 680 permit.
Woodside currently maintains a 17.5% non-operated working interest in the block.
The discovery arrives at a critical geopolitical juncture. Global crude prices have surged following the outbreak of conflict in Iran and the subsequent blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that has effectively removed nearly 20% of the world’s daily petroleum supply.
Woodside confirmed that the joint venture is evaluating the technical data to determine the next steps for appraisal and development.
The partners are exploring "tie-back" opportunities, which would involve connecting the Bandit find to Occidental’s existing subsea infrastructure or neighbouring platforms to accelerate the commencement of production.
Mark Abbotsford, Woodside’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasised that the discovery underscores the "high-quality" nature of the US Gulf and its essential role in providing secure, reliable energy.
The success at Bandit follows an aggressive portfolio expansion for the Australian energy giant; Woodside recently emerged as the winning bidder for two additional blocks in the BBG2 lease sale.
