New Zealand is grappling with a deepening socio-economic crisis as official unemployment hit a decade-high of 5.4% in late 2025, leaving an estimated 165,000 people out of work.

Recent data suggests the situation is worsening, with over 220,000 citizens now relying on Jobseeker Support.

The surge follows the Reserve Bank's aggressive interest rate hikes, a move aimed at cooling inflation—currently at 3.1%—but one that critics argue has "engineered" a painful recession.

The fallout is visible across the country’s industrial heartland.

Food manufacturing giant Heinz Wattie’s recently confirmed the closure of several processing plants, claiming 300 jobs, while McCain and Juken NZ have signalled similar shutdowns that threaten hundreds more roles in regional hubs like Hastings and Kaitāia.

The construction and retail sectors are also reeling; nearly 8,000 jobs vanished in the year to February, and high-profile chains like The Warehouse and EB Games have announced significant redundancies or total store closures.

The social consequences are becoming increasingly severe, with one in three households reporting food insecurity and child poverty rates climbing.

While the National-led government faces mounting pressure, the opposition Labour Party remains under fire for its own previous handling of the economy.
