The Albanese Government announced a temporary suspension of entry for Iranian citizens travelling to Australia, effective March 26.

The snap decision, revealed by Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Tony Burke, stems from growing federal concerns regarding visa compliance.

Authorities fear that current geopolitical instability may prevent visitors from departing Australia once their temporary stays expire, potentially leading to a surge in unplanned onshore protection claims.

The six-month freeze utilises newly passed legislative powers and specifically targets individuals currently outside the country holding a Subclass 600 Visitor Visa linked to an Iranian passport.

The department confirmed the controls will not apply to Iranian nationals already within Australian borders.

Minister Burke defended the intervention as a necessary measure to maintain the integrity of the migration system, stating that permanent residency should be a "deliberate decision of the government" rather than a "random consequence" of holiday timing.

He noted that many visas issued prior to the current conflict might not meet the rigorous criteria required under today's global climate.

The move has sparked a fierce backlash from the Australian Greens, who labelled the policy "brutal and unfair."

Greens Senator David Shoebridge accused Labor of political cynicism, suggesting the ban is designed to block Iranians from seeking asylum, similar to the high-profile protection claims made by members of the Iranian women’s football team.

With an estimated 7,200 visa holders yet to arrive, the minor party argues the government is abandoning vulnerable individuals for the sake of "orderly" optics.
