KOGAS accuses Albanese government of breaking LNG promise

Share

South Korea’s state-owned Korea Gas has openly accused the Albanese government of breaking its promise to protect long-term LNG contracts, sparking a major diplomatic rift over Canberra’s proposed domestic gas reservation scheme.

The extraordinary backlash from the world’s largest LNG buyer undermines assurances from Resources Minister Madeleine King, who recently toured Japan and South Korea to guarantee Australia's reliability as an energy partner.

The friction centres on Labor’s draft policy requiring Queensland LNG exporters to redirect the equivalent of 20% of their overseas shipments to the struggling domestic market to curb soaring east-coast household and business energy prices.

KOGAS Australia, which holds a 15% stake in Santos' (ASX:STO) GLNG Project, claims the framework treats individual foreign joint-venture partners as "regulated entities", despite them having no local domestic supply operations.

The company argues this creates a direct, retroactive obligation that completely alters its initial multibillion-dollar investment thesis, which was built on an export-led model to secure South Korean energy supplies.

The GLNG venture is uniquely vulnerable to the policy because it currently produces only enough gas to meet its strict export commitments.

Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher backed KOGAS's concerns, warning that forcing the venture to supply the local market constitutes direct interference with existing long-term sales contracts.
