Australia's defence chief has cautioned that while the nation possesses the naval capability to intervene in the Strait of Hormuz, doing so could compromise vital security interests in the Indo-Pacific.

Speaking in Canberra on April 9, Admiral David Johnston confirmed that the Australian Defence Force is prepared to deploy a warship to the volatile waterway, where Iran’s blockade of roughly 20% of global oil and gas supplies has sent energy prices soaring.

However, he questioned whether such a move is prudent given that the United States has diverted significant military assets—including air defence and precision munitions—away from the Indo-Pacific to bolster Middle Eastern operations.

"I am very confident we could deploy a ship into that environment," Admiral Johnston told reporters. "But perhaps what is at least as important a question is: where do our priorities lie?"

The remarks coincide with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s departure for Singapore, where he warned that even a resolution to the current conflict would not signal a return to "business as usual".

While the government has extended the deployment of an E-7A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft for defensive missions in the Gulf, it remains hesitant to commit naval forces.

The strategic restraint reflects growing anxiety among regional allies who feel exposed by the vacuum left by shifting US capabilities, particularly as territorial tensions with Beijing intensify.

With the 2026 National Defence Strategy due for release next week, Johnston’s comments underscore a delicate balancing act: supporting global maritime security without leaving Australia’s own doorstep vulnerable.
