Massive disruptions have hit Australia's resource sector as Tropical Cyclone Narelle, currently a Category 3 system, barrels toward the Western Australian coastline.
Port authorities confirmed on March 26 that several critical iron ore and liquefied natural gas terminals—including Ashburton, Dampier, Cape Preston West, and Varanus Island—have suspended all operations in the face of escalating gale-force winds.
The closure impacts several industry titans; Chevron’s Wheatstone LNG plant and Mineral Resources' (ASX:MIN) iron ore exports via Ashburton are currently halted, while Rio Tinto's (ASX:RIO) industrial salt and iron ore shipments through Dampier have also ceased.
Despite the widespread regional shutdown, Port Hedland, the world’s premier iron ore export hub, remains operational for the time being.
Meteorology experts warn the system is expected to intensify further, likely reaching a severe Category 4 status by March 26 afternoon.
