Canadian Phosphate secures key permit for Wapiti Project

Share

Canadian Phosphate (ASX:CP8) secured a five-year exploration permit for its 100%-owned Wapiti Phosphate Project in British Columbia.

Granted by the Ministry of Mines and Critical Minerals, the permit allows the Perth-based company to commence drilling operations this northern summer, following an application submitted in 2025.

The primary objective of the upcoming works is to refine the site’s geological model and provide an updated JORC mineral resource estimate.

Managing Director and CEO Daniel Gleeson highlighted the project's rarity, noting that Wapiti is one of only two known sedimentary phosphate projects in Canada—both of which are controlled by CP8.

Recent geopolitical tensions in Iran, alongside China’s decision to halt exports and Russia’s market absence, have exposed significant vulnerabilities in the global phosphate trade.

With Morocco currently controlling approximately 70% of global rock phosphate resources, the concentration of leverage has prompted nations like the United States to transition into net importers, threatening long-term fertiliser and food security.

By advancing the Wapiti Project, Canadian Phosphate aims to establish a reliable, domestic supply of sedimentary phosphate.

The company is now entering final preparations for its summer drilling programme as it seeks to transform this cornerstone asset into a pillar of regional industrial stability.

At the time of reporting, Canadian Phosphate’s share price was $0.12.
