Australia's labour market showed signs of cooling in February, with the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbing to 4.3%, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The data reveals a nuanced shift in the workforce; while the number of employed people actually grew by 49,000, this was offset by a 35,000-person increase in the unemployed pool.

The paradox was driven largely by a surge in the participation rate to 66.9%, as more Australians—particularly those aged 65 and over—entered the hunt for work.

The growth in employment was entirely propped up by part-time roles, which saw a robust increase of 79,000, masking a concerning drop of 30,000 full-time positions.

Sean Crick, ABS head of labour statistics, noted that the typical "January-to-February" hiring flow was more sluggish than in previous years, with fewer people transitioning from "waiting to start" into active roles.

"We also saw more people remaining unemployed this month compared to recent Februarys," Crick observed, adding that the trend is further complicated by a slowdown in retirements.

Despite the headline rise, the trend unemployment rate actually edged down to 4.2%, suggesting a level of underlying resilience.

As the ABS prepares to modernise its data collection systems this April, the figures provide a critical snapshot of a transitionary period where Australians are working more part-time hours while full-time opportunities tighten.
