As the AI buildout relies more heavily on credit and equity financing, access to capital is emerging as an another more acute pain point for the AI trade. Hyperscalers alongside specialized AI ventures are flooding credit markets with record amounts of new debt to pay for power-hungry data centers, chips, and energy grids. At the same time, governments, led by the US, facing skyrocketing budget deficits, rising defense budgets, and higher term premiums are issuing record volumes of sovereign debt. Traders are now making space in their portfolios for corporate bonds offering far higher yields on AI debt as a wave of potential mega-IPOs from OpenAI and Anthropic approach.
