Infrastructure developer Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners commenced commercial operations at the first stage of its landmark Supernode Battery Project.
Located in Brisbane, the facility's output is being managed exclusively by Origin Energy (ASX:ORG) under a full-capacity dispatch agreement for the project’s initial phases.
The first stage delivers 260 megawatts of power with 619 megawatt-hours of storage capacity. Development is already accelerating, with Quinbrook confirming that the second and third stages are currently underway.
The expansions are slated to come online across 2026 and 2027, significantly boosting the grid's ability to "soak up" excess solar generation during daylight hours and release it during peak demand.
The partnership marks a major milestone for Origin Energy, which now holds 100% of the capacity rights for the first two stages.
According to Greg Jarvis, Origin’s Head of Energy Supply, the activation of Supernode brings the company’s total operational large-scale battery storage to 710 MW.
"This project provides the essential stability and flexibility the grid requires as we transition to a higher mix of renewables," Quinbrook stated, highlighting the battery's role in firming Brisbane's energy reliability.
At the time of reporting, Origin Energy's share price was $11.87.
