Western Australia still struggles with sky-high electricity prices

Western Australia is still grappling with the highest electricity prices in the country in the December 2023 quarter despite a slight decrease from the previous quarter.

The wholesale market recorded an average of $83.83 per megawatt-hour, a 15% increase from the December 2022 quarter.

While retail customers, under the monopoly of the State Government through Synergy, remain shielded from rising generation costs, businesses directly bear the impact.

The State Government stressed that residential consumers are unaffected due to capped retail prices, public ownership of power assets, and a domestic gas reservation policy.

Western Australia's wholesale prices remain higher than other states, with Victoria boasting the lowest at just $26/MWh.
