Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for a return to the 'cypherpunk' ethos that initially drove the blockchain's development.

Buterin believes this vision was lost when financialisation of the network took hold in 2017.

He originally intended Ethereum to operate as a decentralised, public hard drive using peer-to-peer messaging and file storage.

Despite these changes, Buterin stated he was encouraged by the innovative solutions being developed to tackle industry-wide problems.
