The Victorian labour government is proposing a shift in its strategy to discourage fossil fuel use by implementing substantial upfront fees for gas connections starting in 2025.
According to a report by the Essential Services Commission, households could face fees ranging from $1,779 to $2,378, depending on location, while businesses may be charged between $7,111 and $30,993.
The commission suggests this approach aligns with connection fees for water and electricity, providing clear pricing signals.
The move is part of the government's plan to transition to renewables, including a ban on gas connections in new homes starting Jan. 1, 2024.
