The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is exploring the use of zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) to aid refugees.
According to Carmen Hett, Treasurer of the Division of Financial and Administrative Management for UNHCR, the UN agency is looking to create an identity infrastructure for quick and safe migration of verified refugees.
This system would use ZK-proofs to bolster the security and anonymity of refugee identities.
These ZK-proofs would help in overcoming one of the major challenges faced by refugees, which is verifying their identity when the relevant details are held by their home governments.
This builds on the UN's existing use of cryptocurrency wallets to provide financial aid to refugees.
