Alaska Airlines grounds flights due to technology disruptions in Seattle

Alaska Airlines (NYSE:ALK) temporarily grounded flights at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Sunday night due to “significant disruptions” caused by an unspecified technology issue.

The problem, which also affected the airline's app and website, was resolved by around 10 p.m. local time.

In a statement posted on their homepage, Alaska Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to cancel or reschedule flights if possible.

"We apologize for the inconvenience and are working quickly to resolve the issue," the airline said.

Although the exact cause of the disruption remains unclear, the carrier responded to customer concerns on X (formerly Twitter), apologizing for delays.

The incident adds to recent travel difficulties in Seattle, a key hub for Alaska Airlines. Just last week, the Port of Seattle, which operates Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, revealed it had been targeted in a cyberattack.

Hackers demanded $6 million in bitcoin for documents stolen in late August, though the Port declined to pay the ransom.

The airport has been gradually recovering from the cyberattack, which occurred days before the busy Labor Day travel weekend.
