Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) is set to begin extensive testing of its new battery-electric Hilux pickup truck, targeting a production start in Thailand by the end of 2025, according to Pras Ganesh, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Asia.

The announcement came during the Future Mobility Asia summit.

Pickup trucks account for over half of all vehicle sales in Thailand, where Toyota faces increasing competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.

The country's robust market and Toyota’s substantial manufacturing presence make it an ideal location for launching the Hilux BEV, Toyota's first electric pickup model.

While details on pricing and production volumes remain undisclosed, Ganesh’s comments underline Toyota’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup and securing a significant stake in Southeast Asia's evolving automotive landscape.
