Telstra and Optus cease exclusive Google search deals amid ACCC probe

Telcos Telstra and Optus will no longer enter into exclusive agreements with Google for pre-installing and setting Google search as the default on Android devices they supply.

The decision follows an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission into Google's search services in Australia.

The agreements, in place since at least 2017, allowed Google to limit competition by precluding rival search engines in exchange for a share of advertising revenue.

The ACCC accepted undertakings from Telstra and Optus, resolving concerns over their involvement in potentially anti-competitive practices.
