In a surprising move, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) has acquired the streaming rights to two National Football League (NFL) games scheduled for Christmas Day, as announced in a post on X Wednesday morning.
This marks a significant shift in strategy for the streaming giant, which had previously steered clear of live sports content.
The NFL is set to reveal the teams for the doubleheader matchups when it releases its full schedule Wednesday evening.
Sources close to the deal, suggest that Netflix will pay less than $150 million per game.
The agreement extends beyond just this year's holiday games as Netflix disclosed that it would stream at least one NFL game on Christmas Day annually over the next three seasons.
