BHP Group (ASX:BHP) is reportedly preparing to launch a formal search for a new CEO, with internal contenders and external candidates expected to be considered for the top job.

According to company insiders, current CEO Mike Henry is approaching the end of his tenure, though no official decision has been made.

The succession process could begin as early as next year, with top executives reportedly ramping up engagement with investors and stakeholders in anticipation.

Among the leading internal candidates are Geraldine Slattery, head of BHP's Australian operations; CFO Vandita Pant; and commercial chief Ragnar Udd.

However, sources familiar with the matter said the mining giant is also likely to explore external options.

The potential leadership change comes at a critical juncture for BHP and the broader mining industry, which has recently grappled with stalled mega-deals and mounting geopolitical uncertainty, including fallout from US trade tensions.
