South32's expansion plan for the Boddington Mine in the Northern Jarrah Forest has received conditional approval from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The move allows them to extend operations for 15 years to access over 200 million tonnes of ore reserves for the Worsley refinery.

Despite concerns from conservationists about impacts on endangered wildlife, the EPA's endorsement includes conditions such as achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and creating a 12,000 hectare offsets package for mined land.

Rehabilitation and protection measures have been strengthened, including reduced native vegetation clearing and exclusion zones near water bodies and significant flora and fauna.
