Ditobanx and ICP Hub Mexico have partnered to launch an initiative promoting cryptocurrency use at Mexican universities.
As part of this program, over 4,000 students received $5.42 (100 pesos) worth of Ckbtc, a cryptocurrency dubbed the "bitcoin twin," to use at campus cafes, restaurants, and copy shops.
Salvadoran fintech firm Ditobanx and the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) Hub aim to boost cryptocurrency adoption in Mexico through this alliance.
The initiative allows students at Aguascalientes institutions to use Ckbtc for payments, leveraging the ICP blockchain's speed and efficiency combined with Bitcoin's (CRYPTO:BTC) security and trust.
The ICP website describes Ckbtc as a multi-chain Bitcoin twin, enabling transactions within two seconds with minimal fees.
To launch the initiative, over 4,000 students received $5.42 in Ckbtc, usable at various campus facilities.
This program introduces students to cryptocurrencies and aims to enhance financial inclusion.
Initially targeting Aguascalientes universities, the pilot program plans to expand to institutions in Bajío and Mexico City.
Ckbtc, launched by the Dfinity Foundation on April 3, 2023, is backed 1-to-1 by Bitcoin, making it more secure than wrapped tokens, according to supporters.
Its fast and cost-effective transactions make it suitable for decentralised commerce, reducing risks associated with third-party custodians.
The initiative by Ditobanx and ICP Hub Mexico represents a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrency into everyday transactions within educational institutions.
By providing students with hands-on experience using digital currencies, the program aims to foster a broader acceptance and understanding of cryptocurrencies.
This approach aligns with the global trend of increasing cryptocurrency adoption and aims to position Mexican universities at the forefront of financial innovation.
