In Canada, the provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia (BC) are implementing measures to curb energy access for cryptocurrency mining due to its high power consumption.

Manitoba has extended its moratorium on new electrical service requests for crypto mining, specifically targeting new applications and pending requests for electric service.

This extension prolongs the initial 18-month pause until April 30, 2026, with plans to devise a long-term strategy during this period.

BC is also considering legislative measures to restrict power provision to new crypto-mining ventures, reflecting concerns over environmental impact and power consumption.

These actions highlight a cautious approach toward crypto operations' expansion, emphasising sustainable power management and the exploration of long-term energy solutions for the sector.
