190 countries have agreed to quit coal, while more than 40 countries have pledged to quit coal following recent COP26 talks.
Only a handful of stalwarts continue to hold a flame for the commodity.
Major coal users including Poland, Vietnam and Chile agreed to flame out coal, whilst heavy coal users and exporters including Australia, India, China and the US continue to stoke the fire.
Under the terms of the pledge, countries agreed to ?phase out and not build, or invest in new coal power for the first time?.
Poland was one of the 40 signatories with the European nation reducing its coal production by a staggering 24% over the last five years.
A heavy reduction in coal use is widely viewed as the centrepiece in helping to limit the impacts of global warming.
Between 2015 and 2020, Australia cut its coal production by 2.97%, but maintained exports for the same period with 9.95 exajoules exported. In 2020, it exported 9.25 exajoules.
With many nations grappling with the financial and social impacts of COVID-19, a formal pledge to reduce coal production was a bridge too far.
Indonesia declined to quit coal and new coal projects in line with its coal expansion policy.
But with a number of big names like BHP, FMG and Anglo American entering the hydrogen race, and renewables already generating 29% of the world?s electricity, coal might flame out sooner than expected.
