Australian retail sales rose 7.3% to a record high $33.4 billion for the month of November 2021 as harsh lockdowns along Australia?s east coast came to an end, according to data compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Online shopping remains elevated across the country as COVID-fear keeps Aussies shopping from the comfort of their homes despite harsh lockdowns ending months ago.
Despite online retail still dominating, the number of Aussies venturing back into department stores rose 26% for the month, while online sales fell by 8.7% for November to $3.7bn.
The shift away from pandemic-safe retail continued into the food sector with online sales of food falling from $1.037 million in October 2021 to $975k in November 2021.
Clothing sales soared 38% as Aussies prepared to trade the lockdown activewear uniform for on-trend fashion.
Following the release of November?s retail sales data on Tuesday 11 January, shares in Premier Investments (ASX:PMV), the parent company of The Just Group whose brands include Dotti, Peter Alexander, Jacqui E, Portmans and more, rose 2.5%.
