Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has urged developers to broaden the network’s mission beyond decentralised finance and support a wider ecosystem of open technologies.
Buterin said Ethereum should help build “sanctuary technologies” such as privacy tools, decentralised coordination systems and communication infrastructure that reduce dependence on governments or large technology platforms.
“The goal is not to remake the world in Ethereum’s image,”
Buterin wrote in a post outlining his vision for the network’s long-term role.
He argued Ethereum should move toward a full-stack ecosystem spanning wallets and applications as well as deeper layers such as operating systems, hardware and security infrastructure.
Some industry figures support the broader vision, saying blockchain networks could provide resilient infrastructure for identity, communication and governance as digital systems become increasingly centralised.
Others warn Ethereum should remain focused on its core strength in decentralised finance, noting that few blockchain applications outside financial services have successfully scaled to global adoption.
The debate comes as Ethereum developers continue rolling out upgrades designed to increase network capacity and reduce transaction costs while expanding the platform’s broader use cases.
At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $1,973.56.
